Guitar is a stringed musical instrument with frets and strings that are usually metal or some other rigid material. They produce sound when the vibration, or "sound waves", produced by the vibration of the guitar's strings are amplified via microphones and speakers. The normal guitar is the more basic of the two types and has 6 strings in the top four frets (the higher fret, when higher above the bottom E string, produces a note an octave higher than when higher). These are strummed with fingers. The fusion guitar has 7 strings in the top 4 frets (the higher fret) with two separate necks placed on top of each other. This allows for double stopping with bass strings, 12 notes to each fret rather than only 6 notes. It yields a thicker sound than normal guitar and can be strummed in many different styles. Fusion guitar can be strummed in different styles. There are many different designs for modern guitars, making their selection dependent upon the desired style of music. Genres are often associated with certain colors or styles of guitars, such as the "brown" sound of country music or the "black" sound of heavy metal. Some instruments have a fixed bridge that does not allow string adjustment without disassembly of the guitar. These bridges are usually located on the top of the instrument and may also have a vibrato arm attached to it for tuning and intonation purposes (see illustration). The bridge must be removed when changing strings because it holds the strings in place when you play. All guitars have six strings, but the tuning for some guitars can be different. The reason is because each string of a group has a different role in the music making. The following are the six main roles of strings in guitar. The first string (lowest) is called low E string and has a tight, clear sound for playing heavy rhythms; it is an important rhythm and rhythm-playing string as well as gives its tone to chord formation.
